This picture shows the rotating head of the
shearer, that is used to extract the coal especially from large seams. Because
of the rotation and the sharp cisels the shearer is able to cut 60 cm of coal
from the face each time it passes by. The "roof" above the shearer is usually
placed vertically behind the rotating head of the machine in order to push the
extracted coal onto the face chain.
