A lot of steam at the ancient colliery. In earlier times the
ventilation of the roadways etc. underground was not as good as it is today, so
that more shafts were required: As you can see, this was the colliery's 13th
shaft. Today ventilation is much better so that a typical colliery has no more
than five or six shafts.
