On the conveyor that can be seen in this photo the coal was
brought to the surface. Let me draw your attention to the boxes with water under
the ceiling: The shock wave of a firedamp explosion will destroy the boxes and the water
falling down will cool down the flames that are coming after the shock wave so
that they will not be able to cause any damage.
