This engine is used to generate electricity. In
order to keep the concentration of methane gas underground as low as possible it is
extracted from the coal seams before the production process starts. It was a
pity not to use this gas, so engines are installed that burn the gas and
generate
electricity, warm water etc.. In this picture you can see one of these engines
at Ost colliery.
