Even if a shearer is used lots of activities
are run from the surface. The operator can see, control etc. the same things as
the one of a steel plow and by that react very fast if there are unexpected
changes or failures. The other instutitions visible in this photo are used to
communicate with the miners in a depth of more than 1100 metres.
