Let me draw your attention to the large driving wheel in the background: In
earlier times flat ropes have been used for hoisting quite frequently and not
the round ones as they are common today. For that reason the driving wheels at
the winding machines and the wheels in the winding towers' heads were much wider
and not as narrow as they are today. This fact can be seen here very well.
