In earlier times the hard coal has been produced in a depth
between 500 and 600 metres under the surface - today the coal is extracted from
seams between -1.100 and -1.500 metres. But: All collieries - the former ones and
those that are still producing coal - are connected to each others in different
ways. Because of that fact the water coming from the higher levels of the former
collieries would pour into the ones that are still in use and make the coal
production much harder and much more expensive. That is why some shafts of
former collieries in the Ruhr area have not been filled up, yet. For example at
Carolinenglueck colliery in Bochum-Hamme and at the one in this photo - Robert
Mueser colliery - strong pumps have been mounted. These ones here have to pump
the water from a depth of about 500 metres.
