It seems to be a custom that the miners have to hold a glass of
beer in their hand and that they have to jump over what is called "Arschleder" (translation:
"piece of leather for the arse") in German. The piece of leather was tied around
the waist and had to protect the miners' bottoms. By jumping the man becomes a
miner: He has to drink the glass of beer, say his very special aphorism and jump
over the piece of leather.
