This picture shows a winding machine
("Koepe hoisting", for an explanation
please click here), as it is used in the mining industry of the Ruhr and the
Saar area very frequently. The machine that can
be seen in this picture is situated at the Monopol shaft in Bergkamen (Germany).
It has a payload of 27 tons, three ropes and moves its load with a speed of 16
metres per second - that is about 57.6 kilometres per hour - vertically through
the shaft. The driving wheel has a diameter of 6.5 metres. The load mentioned
before can be a pit cage with three or four levels or - in the shafts where the
coal is brought to the surface - a container with a payload of 20 tons of raw
coal.
