This website is dedicated to a mining accident that occurred on February 2nd in 1962 at the Alsbach shaft of Luisenthal colliery in the Saar region (Germany). 299 miners lost their life and there were only a few mining accidents in the history with more victims. On the pages you can find several photos and information about the firedamp explosion, a list with the names of all victims, some newspaper articles about the accident and lots of other things.

This very informative website is run by a community from the city of Ronneburg in the German Federal State called Thuringia. When the GDR still existed, in Ronneburg uranium ore was produced. This website describes the history of the uranium ore mining industry in that region, there is a list and there are several photos of the former mines and their shafts, the machines that were used underground are presented and the visitors can listen to the typical sounds that can be heard underground – just by clicking with the mouse.

The city of Mansfeld is situated in the German Federal State of Saxonia-Anhalt and in earlier times numerous copper mines could be found there. The project “Kupferspuren” (translation: “traces of the copper”) has done a lot of research about the history of the copper mining industry in that region and now the results are presented on this website. The translation of the website’s name is „Mining in the Zschopau Valley“. This valley is situated in the Erzgebirge („Ore Mountains“) in Eastern Germany close to the city of Zschopau. Here you can find various pieces of information about the ancient mining industry close to that city and how it is presented today. For example, a small village has been built in which it is shown how the miners lived several decades ago and additionally there is a visitor’s mine where the visitors can go underground and experience how the ore that gave the name to the entire region was extracted in earlier times. In the city of Meggen in the Sauerland (Germany) in earlier times barite was produced, but the mines have been closed some years ago. Nevertheless there is a very active miners’ band that keeps upright the corresponding traditions and that can be booked for events.
